Course Title: QUESTING FOR A STORY
Hosted by: Young Voices Foundation

INSTRUCTOR
: Catherine E. McLean

DATES: September 12 through 30, 2011 (Three weeks, 3 sessions).  Click here for Course Schedule

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Interesting short stories that grab a reader's attention and keep them turning pages don't happen by accident. Regardless of genre, such stories have the same basic foundation, a blueprint, that ensure a satisfying read. This fundamentals course is for youth, novices through intermediate writers, in 7th through 12 grades who will learn:

* what the Developed Short Story's foundation is
     * what an "interesting" protagonist is

* why setting is not just scenery

* how choosing the right antagonist showcases "the story problem"

* what craft elements are must-haves if the story is to make it to an editor's desk for publication

This is not a lecture but a hands-on course where students are encouraged to ask questions, participate in discussions, and to share the information garnered from simple assignments.

BONUS: A free "Cheat Sheet" of Bloopers and Blunders (listing 46 common mistakes made in writing fiction) will be given to every student who completes this course.
