Young Voices of America Rewrite a Story Open to Students in Grades 6 -12 Rewriting is as important as everything else a writer does when creating a piece. No matter how good an essay, short story, article or novel seems to be when you finish the last line, trust me, it still needs work.
Sometimes it’s spelling or punctuation that must to be corrected. Often the point of view gets muddled. That happens when one of your characters know something without having seen, heard or been told about it. And sometimes – as in this contest - the characters speak in a manner that doesn’t fit the time and place.
Young Voices Foundation is pleased to offer students in Grades 6 -12 the opportunity to participate in a unique and exciting writing experience.
Students are invited to rewrite the first three chapters of a Young Adult novel written in 1990 by Dr. Sacra Nicholas, Nancy Hendrix and Barbara Fite.
The dialogue needs to be updated and the characterization and setting adjusted to reflect the way young people speak to and interact with one another in today’s world. Cash prizes will be awarded for First, Second and Third Place for entries that best bring the writing up to date while maintaining the original story line and message. After the close of the contest and based on the quality of the entries received, the writer with the best adaptation may be offered an opportunity to do additional rewriting at the discretion of the original authors. However, there is no guarantee that an offer will be made.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Participants must comply with all contest guidelines. Failure to do so will result in disqualification.
